“There isn’t a day in my life when I haven’t felt like a fraud.”
Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) is the beating heart and soul of William Friedkin’s 1973 horror masterpiece The Exorcist. The film is, of course, about the devil possessing a pre-teen girl named Regan (Linda Blair) and about the torment and anguish it causes her and her mother (Ellen Burstyn), but it’s hard to argue that, at the end of the day, Father Karras is who the film is actually about. His journey from a man wrestling with his faith and dealing with the death of his mother to a hero of the highest order.
